gnats

Hi,

Great info on your website!  We live in Colorado and the gnats are getting worse every year.  We can’t do anything outside w/o them flying in eyes, nose, ears and mouth.  They don’t seem to bite, just drive us insane landing on us or IN us!

Jonathan:

Loved your web info on Gnats and really would love your thoughts on which way to go.  We just moved to DC.  We have lots of tall trees in our yard along the perimeter and thus lots of perimeter shade.  We just put up a play set in the corner of the yard for our 16 month old son.  It is well shaded and has mulch around the bottom.  We have another baby on the way due in Nov.

We have a gnat that is flying around our house inside and making our lives miserable, they bite our eyes, nose, hair,  ears in fact I believe they are biting alll over now, in the house everywhere .
We found a squirrel had been in our attic, could they have brought these mites or gnats with them, they have been captured by a critter control company, they got one..then they put delta dust in my attic…this did not help whats in the house, used D-force HPX and also  prevecort ( I think thats the word) all to no avail..
Can you suggest something we can use to eliminate these horrible pest that are making our lives miserable. we reside in Florida, also notice white specks in our car on the dash board, we clean them off and within hours they are back on the dash.

I just have a question concerning gnats.  Can gnats cause any kind of infection?

Thanks!

The easy answer to your question is "no, not directly". But many insects can serve as "vectors" or carriers of disease. This is why people and societies aren't more tolerant of insects in general; they can serve as a powerful vector spreading disease rapidly and effectively throughout communities. There is no doubt pests like mosquitoes, fleas and roaches are both effective carriers and transmitters of disease. Filth flies fall into this category since they like to land on anything nasty. In fact, the more nasty it is the more they like it! And the wide range of gnats active around the world include several species which like to nest or rest in some nasty environments too. If they were to land in such an area and immediately thereafter land on someone all kinds of "bad things" could be transmitted or effectively placed on a person that could indirectly lead to an infection of some sort.

Does your nat repellent come in a liquid so it could be sprayed on horses or cows?

We have several gnat repellents which come in a liquid. The most common one used on horses and cattle is our PERMETHRIN. This odorless formulation can be sprayed on. Use a good PUMP SPRAYER. Treatments will last several days and it does a good job of keeping gnats, biting flies and pests off horses, cows and other farm animals. It can also be used in and around their sleeping quarters throughout the year for a wide range of insects.

I need something safe and organic I can use for gnats in and around my african grey parrot cage.

Using any pesticide around birds is not a good idea unless it's organic. Up till now we've had a limited selection but currently stock some organic aerosol products which are proving Ok for use in sensitive areas. Both the FLYING INSECT KILLER and HOUSE PLANT INSECT KILLER are certified organic by NOP and are ideally suited for your situation.
