whiteflies

I read your article on whiteflies, which is one of the best I have found.
We have a greenhouse that was horribly infected with whiteflies last season. As we are about to start it up again, I wondered if we should treat the greenhouse now (will that help with any that may be dormant but will reemerge).
If we should treat now, what should we buy?
Also, I think we will use the Orthene fogger in season but wonder if it is not advised on tomatoes or anything we may eat.
Thank  you for your help!

Hi There, I've read your very informative article about controlling white flies and I'm curious about the possibility of tenting my 3 gardenias and fogging them. They are about 6' x 6' and are outside. I could rig up a plastic tent for each one of them and fog away couldn't I? Spraying is SUCH a pain! Thanks, K.S.

I read your information with great interest. I'm writing to ask advice. I have a fuschia that I've had for nine years. It has become a lovely tree, and lived in our living room. This year, for the fist time, it became infested with white flies. I used insecticidal soap, then something called pyeolin (sp?) and then took it outside on our balcony (we have no access to a yard) and sprayed it with Sevin very very thoroughly. Well, the white flies are still very populous, and I'm writing to ask it it is worth my while trying to defeat them with more products, such as Permethrin and Bifen, and buying a sprayer or whether in this instance I should just concede defeat? Now that they have also infested the plants on my balcony–pansies in peat-moss planters, I imagine need to throw those away too, and get rid of all the dirt, or they'll come forth again in the Spring. Is that true? Please advise! Thank you.

I was looking at the bufen fogger for my greenhouse when I put plants inside for the fall.  We have been plagued this season with white fly and mealybugs and I want to make sure they don't breed as the plants overwinter in the greenhouse.  Of course I'll try not to put anything in the greenhouse that has bugs of any kind on it!
My question is, my greenhouse is 8 1/2 x 16 1/2 so it isn't nearly 3000 square feet.  Will the fogger be too much for that small area?
Thanks for your help and for a great web site!

This has been the most informative Article on whitefly infestation! Thank you. We have heavy infestation. We have used orthomax once every 10 days about 4 times now and to no avail. We go all around the plant and saturate from top to bottom. We are considering knuckle cutting (which we have not done in the past) our crepe myrtles, just to get rid of the bugs, as this seems to be their plant of choice. They stink and the sooty mold is dripping from our crepes onto our indian hawthorns which reside directly below. (our mulch is even black….where it was once red … yuk)

I have had a serious infestation of white flies for years.  The traps caught mostly bees and small birds.  Apparently, we are not able to get bifen here in NY.  What do you suggest?

I read your article on white flies, but I am not sure if it is safe to use in a greenhouse. I have recently inherited the responsibility to take care of the greenhouse at our middle school and we are infested with white flies. Any thoughts?
