Greetings,
Let me start out by thanking you in advance for any help you can provide.
I need to know how far a gallon of BORACARE will go in my application. I can make the calculations if you can offer a dilution factor for my siding.
I have a garden shed and a barn that are 100+ year old construction… some with new siding but most with original siding. Both buildings are post and beam construction with vertical tongue and groove cedar siding. The barn has been painted and now most of the paint has flaked off. The shed has never been painted.
I plan to clean the wood on the shed with a bleach solution to make the color uniform and to kill off mold and other plant organisms and then to paint it when dry. The shed is showing signs of having powder post beetle and I have some stacked siding that is definitely infected.
I would like some advice on how to proceed.
Thanks, D.
When using BORACARE for mold control, you can expect to get about 1000 sq/ft of coverage per finished gallon of spray. The BORACARE PRODUCT PAGE covers this in great detail, along with how to best mix it up, and we have video posted that should help make this easy to understand.
Before you apply the Boracare, cleaning the wood is recommended. Bleach can be used but remember, bleach won’t kill the mold. If you have a lot of mold built up on the wood that will be visible, you may have to bleach it a couple of times and then physically remove all you can to make the wood look more aesthetically appealing. Remember that bleach alone is not always strong enough on many species of mold and you might need to employ something like MOLD BLASTER. This product will definitely get the mold for good and could enable you to get down to the wood surface much faster then using just bleach. Remember, having good access to the wood surface is important before you treat with the Boracare. If you leave too much dead debris (mold, dirt, other contaminates) on the wood surface, the Boracare won’t be able to penetrate properly. This will reduce it’s net life expectancy and defeat the purpose of applying it.
Now if you intend on leaving the wood unfinished, treating it with Boracare every few years will provide the needed protection from both mold and insect infestations. And if you stain the wood, I would still reapply the Boracare just prior to restaining every 4-5 years or however long you wait in between stain applications.
