I live next to a walnut orchard, in Central California, and as you can imagine, have a significant issue with ground squirrels. I have been reading about your product line…am going to have to ‘bomb’ some existing burrows. But once that is done I want to establish a boundary around my property. My property is a half-acre. Would I be better using the Coyote Urine or the Whole Control Spray. I have dogs and do not want to harm them in any manner.
Thank you, D.B.
It sounds as though you’ve read through our GROUND SQUIRREL CONTROL ARTICLE and understand you need to make sure you don’t have any currently living in the yard before you start to employ the repellents. Once you’re sure the current population has been removed, I would recommend both the COYOTE URINE and WHOLE CONTROL. At least I’d try this to start. Here’s why.
No doubt the Coyote Urine or even RED FOX URINE should be used around the perimeter of the property. It does a good job of setting up a “territorial” scent barrier that can many times be enough to keep them away and off your land. But urine is a territorial type product and not a true “location” deterrent. So to deter them from digging where they want to live, the Whole Control should be used as well.
Remember to that the Whole Control will only last a few weeks compared to the urine. But during this same time the current “scent” level of ground squirrel activity will drop so that by the time the Whole Control wears down, chances are high the animal odors will have depreciated a lot. This is important. In other words, the urine will work best when the other animal scents have at least lost some of their “newness”. And FYI, it’s that newness that seems to get these guys curious in the first place so by having that extra bit of protection in place in the form of the Whole Control, it can really help stave off any that might make it past the Coyote Urine. This is especially true if any of the squirrels you had nesting on the land were female.
So in summary, I would say to use both and then after the first month you can lean on just the urine to keep them away.
