I live in Depere Wi. We have a problem with common housefly’s in an exterior location. We prepare and serve food in this area and we are looking for a way to control the fly problem in the area of where we are serving and preparing the food. This is an “open area” that has a roof over it but has no walls so the wind can blow directly through. Please advise.
Flying insects can be tough to control when you’re not able to treat key nesting locations. Some flying insects are built to smell food from a long way and flies are one of the best at this ability. That means they’ll be coming around based on local populations and in most cases, treating them at the source of the problem won’t be an option. Without being able to regulate them where they’re breeding, you’re only option is set out traps which can effectively reduce the number foraging in the area. FLY BAG TRAPS have a strong attractant and do quite well for this situation. I suggest you set up 3-6 around the open area attempting to position them slightly downwind from your main location. This way any flies smelling the food will encounter the traps first as they approach and in theory should be caught before they can cause too much of a nuisance. Will this eliminate them altogether? No. But no doubt every one you trap is one less fly that can be a pest to people in the area.
We have other fly control options listed in our FLY CONTROL ARTICLE but we’ve seen these traps deployed are the best way to manage large open areas like the one you’ve described.
