mole and pocket gopher problem

January 4, 2010 By Tech Support Leave a Comment

Sir,

Is your Whole Control product effective against pocket gophers? Or would I be better off trying a product to kill the grub–their food supply?  I also have moles……Thanks in advance.

Moles and pocket gophers are opportunistic when choosing where to nest. They’ll take advantage of food such as grubs in the yard so reducing the local population of this insect is obviously a good approach to reducing the unwanted animals. As explained in our MOLE CONTROL article, there are several products that can be used to knock down grubs and I always suggest starting this process first if you think there is a local problem. I also feel it’s important to test your PH before you begin such applications. If you haven’t done so recently, get a good PH TEST PROBE and make sure your lawn soil is in proper balance. Many times soil which has PH problems will lead to nuisance insects and animals. In such cases, getting the PH in check first as explained on our PH CONTROL article is mandatory.

After you know the PH is Ok, proceed with some grub control. Wait at least 2 weeks following your treatments to see if the impact of your applications are enough to chase any moles or pocket gophers out of the turf. Many times they’ll move elsewhere following the granular and liquid treatments. If they do, stick with the grub treatments and in all likelihood, your problem will be solved. But if they’re still present, apply some WHOLE CONTROL. It’s proven effective for both Pocket Gophers and Moles so it should do the job. Alternatively you can get some of the traps listed for both MOLES and GOPHERS. There are several models which will work on both and when combined with the Whole Control, the combination should enable you to control either infestation.

Lastly, if you proceed with grub control treatments or Whole Control applications, either will have adverse affect on bait. In other words, it’s not practical to use bait when spraying for grubs or applying whole control so if you do either, the only other tool you might employ will be a trap. If you have further questions or concerns, please give us a call on our toll free at 1-800-877-7290.
