I have a fenced in deck where I let me pet dog stay during the day. I feed her out side on the deck and sometimes there is food left out she doesn’t eat. Raccoons have been climbing up over the fence to get the food and I’m afraid there could be conflict with my pet. I don’t feel like trapping this animal as it’s quite large. What else can I do? I tried removing the food but they still come around so started keeping the light on hoping that would work but still they come.
Raccoons spend a lot of time looking for food. Once they find a good source they’ll remember the location and typically return on a regular basis until the food supply runs out. They’re smart, strong and stubborn and you’re right about the possibility of conflict. Raccoons won’t back down from a fight and their sharp claws can cause a lot of damage to most any domestic pet.
Since you don’t feel like trapping, I would say the MOTION ACTIVATED WATER SPRAYER would do the job. Get 1-2 installed at the point where you suspect the raccoons are entering. It shoots a quick blast of water which most raccoons don’t like as you can see in this video.
The following link is for a newspaper article which highlights this device. In the article, the Sprayer was used successfully to chase away Raccoons which were a problem digging in the yard.
