squirrel jumping on window screen

November 19, 2009 By Tech Support 2 Comments

Hello: Your web page is very informative. Can you give me help re a spray that will keep squirrls off a window screen? Or off the patio? The squirrels jump up to the screen from the patio and onto the roof. I’ve had the attic checked and trapped by a pest company, but they didn’t find any squirrels actually in the attic. Thank you.

Once squirrels get active in a given area, they will establish “scent trails” which are a form of trail markers they’ll use for future reference. These markers can be quite strong. And once in place, they’ll be used over and over. In most cases, the best approach is to “trap” out the current squirrels active in the area if you want them gone for good. This would be quite easy as explained in our SQUIRREL CONTROL ARTICLE and after relocating 5-10, you’ll probably reduce the activity next to nothing.

Beyond trapping, I’m afraid the use of repellents to deter them in this same given area could prove futile. Though we have several listed in the above article, I’m not sure any will do a good job on the screens you’re looking to protect. You might be able to blanket the surrounding area with a TRANSONIC ULTRA SOUND DEVICE. I’m sure it would cover the “air space” quite well and this could do the job. It would have to be protected from direct rain but we have had people use it on covered decks and patios effectively. And it works great for inside applications like attics and crawl spaces so don’t rule this out. It will want to run continuously by default but if you leave it running via an electric timer when no one is home or in the area, the squirrels will surely learn to avoid the area. They just don’t like this sound but people can hear it too so the deck probably wouldn’t be the place to be when the unit was turned on. Of course, the squirrels won’t be active at this time anyway with people out and about so it should be Ok to keep off for awhile without them instantly coming around.

Squirrels are using our patio screen/roof for transportation to cross over roof to front yard, then cross the street. I am trying to find a way to keep them OFF our screen and tearing it.

I only have Safflower seed for birds and they have never bothered THAT.

    ?help Thanks

      Bea,

There are two options you can try.

For small pathways, you can apply Pest Rid spray over the trail they’re using. This is a natural “food grade” repellent which will both mask trail odor and send out an “alert” nuisance animals will detect. This alert will cause them to avoid the area. The quart can cover up to 125 sq/ft; the gallon up to 500 sq/ft.

      Pest Rid Spray: http://www.bugspraycart.com/exempt/liquid/pest-rid-exempt-liquid-repellent

But if the area is large, ultra sound would be better suited since it will cover the area “permanently” and won’t need to be reapplied, etc. Basically
you’ll set up the Yard Gard Ultra Sound repeller listed above. This device sends out a sound frequency squirrels do not like.

So for your problem, you’ll want to set one up on the roof, maybe 25-30 feet away from the area they’re using. The sound comes out in a “flashlight” pattern. This means it leaves the device and moves outward in a 75-90 degree angle covering all the air as it moves.

Now you don’t state how large this roof is or how big the screening is they’re using. But I expect one machine installed on one side of the area they use will handle the job. At least it can cover up to 3500 sq/ft which is a big area. So locate the unit far enough away so it will expand the sound over the surfaces you need to protect and that should do the job.

This unit comes with an include AC power supply (with 30 feet of cord) and you’ll want to keep the device running all the time. Set it to “always on” and once in place, I don’t think you’ll see squirrels active there anymore.
